Truck crash sees Champagne spilled across motorway

A truck driver in the US faced a Champagne nightmare after he crashed his vehicle and sent hundreds of bottles of Champagne smashing across the road.

The crash, which happened on the I-395 in Connecticut, dumped cases of Veuve Clicquot across the busy road and caused huge traffic jams.

According to local newspaper, the Norwich Bulletin, the driver William Wronski got into difficulty as he tried to merge with traffic ahead of roadworks. When his lane ended Wronski crashed into a parked Department of Transport truck. But the truck then toppled over onto a hillside spilling its contents of Champagne across the road.

No-one was seriously hurt in the crash although Wronski and the driver of the parked vehicle were treated at the scene for minor injuries. Also one passer-by was hurt as he fell down the hillside in search of a better look, or possibly a free bottle of Champagne.

Emergency workers spent around two hours cleaning up the accident, using a bulldozer to collect the broken bottles.
