Engineers seek funding for beer chiller

Two engineers in the US have gone on to crowd-funding website Kickstarter to try and raise money for their new gadget, which they claim can chill a beer in less than a minute.

Trevor Abbott and Todd Parker have set up SpinChill, and they are looking to raise US$10,000 to help with “tooling and material costs for the first run production.”

As you might expect from engineers there is science behind the invention, as spinning the can introduces convection, which helps cool the beer quicker than simply leaving it in a freezer.

Abbott explained: “After a few semesters of engineering classes, we learned that spinning a beer in ice by hand added convection and drastically increased the rate of heat transfer.

“However being engineers, we knew there had to be a better way than by hand, so we created the Chill Bit.”

Parker added: “The Chill Bit clips on a beer, fits on a drill, spins the beer on ice and chills it within 30 to 60 seconds.”

Although happy with the development of the Chill Bit, the pair soon realised that not everyone carries a drill with them when they need a cold beer, so they developed the portable Beerouette.

Parker explained that “you clip it into a warm beer, turn it on, drop it into a cooler, to cool your beer in less than a minute.”

The obvious question that comes from this technology is what impact the spinning will have on the contents of the can?

Abbott said: “The first question we’re always asked is does the can explode. The answer is no, it doesn’t even foam. You can even use the Beerouette on an open beer.”
