Aristocratic cellar comes up for sale
Sotheby’s is to offer the cellar of the dowager viscountess Rothermere at its London sale in two weeks.
The collection was compiled by the viscountess’ late husband, the 3rd viscount Rothermere, and includes top Bordeaux spanning the 1970s to 2010 – with particularly strong lots from 1989.
Highlights from the Bordeaux include six magnums of 1989 Haut-Brion (£8,500-£10,000) and a case of 1989 La Mission (£6,000-£7,500: pictured left).
The Burgundy part of the collection is dominated by grand crus from Rousseau, Leroy and Liger-Belair, such as a case of 1988 Leroy Clos de Vougeot (£5,500-£7,000, below) and a case of Domaine d’Auvenay 2001 Bonnes Mares (£6,500-£9,000).
Another collection in the first session throws up many lots of Château Lafite, including the 2005 and 2008 vintages, while yet another is dominated by Italian producers such as Gaja and both Aldo and Giacomo Conterno.
Session two features a collection of 1960s Bordeaux (the case of 1961 Haut-Brion featured in yesterday’s rare lot round-up) and the second tranche of a Vega Sicilia cellar.
The auction takes place on Wednesday 18 September
