San Francisco Giants launch Napa fizz
Major League Baseball team the San Francisco Giants have launched a duo of sparkling wines in collaboration with California estate Mumm Napa.
Championship Brut
Limited edition Championship Brut was created to commemorate the Giants’ 2012 World Series win; hence only 2,012 of the US$125 fizz have been bottled.
Described by its makers as a “prestige cuvee”, the wine is made from grapes from specially selected lots from the winery’s best vineyards in the Napa Valley.
To mark the partnership, every Giants player will be given a bottle of Championship Brut with an etched label featuring their name and number.
The US$27 Giants Brut Prestige meanwhile, is a repackaged bottling of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blend Mumm Napa Brut Prestige.
More widely available than Championship Brut, the sparkler has gone on sale on the Giants’ website and at select US restaurants, bars and retailers.
“Mumm Napa was the sparkling wine of choice for the 2012 World Series and we’re pleased to extend this relationship to our fans this year with the creation of two unique Giants wines,” said Mario Alioto, senior vice president of business operations for the Giants.
In addition, Mumm Napa’s range will be on pour at tastings during select games, in the ballpark at special events throughout the season, and during team celebrations.
Giants Brut Prestige
“Mumm Napa and the San Francisco Giants are an ideal pairing. We’re both interested in celebrating life’s victories,” said Mumm Napa’s winemaker Ludovic Dervin.
Founded in 1979 in Rutherford along the Silverado Trail, Mumm Napa is one of the only méthode traditionnelle sparkling wine producers in California.
The estate is a joint venture between the Champagne G.H. Mumm and Bourbon moguls Seagram & Sons.
The Giants join a long line of sports stars who have entered into wine, from Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi to ice hockey great Wayne Gretzky.
An in-depth look at the growing phenomenon of celebrity wines will appear in the May issue of the drinks business, out next week.
