Greywacke Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2012

Writing in The Independent, Terry Kirby recommended this wine to go with fish.

He wrote: “The much-praised rival to the celebrated Cloudy Bay is well worth searching out – amazingly vibrant, luscious flavours of gooseberry, kiwi, grapefruit and green peppers coupled with palate-tingling freshness. Sensational with shellfish or crustacea.

Domaine Les Grandes Costes Pic Saint Loup 2009

Keeping with the food recommendations, Kirby also picked out this wine to go with chicken or lamb. He wrote: “The rocky outcrop of Pic Saint Loup is home to some of the finest wines of the Languedoc. Old, low-yield vines and long hot summers produce wines of terrific power and concentration using typical blends of Syrah and Grenache, as here, resulting in a generous mouthful of dark-black fruits and mountain herbs, undercut with spiciness.”

Three Houses GSM

In the Mail on Sunday, Olly Smith picked out this wine, which is available for less than £5 at Aldi supermarkets. Smith wrote: “It can be tough to find good value under a fiver these days, but for a simple, fruity weeknight sipper, this red from Valencia delivers the goods – easy-drinking soft vino with the flavours of three tasty Spanish grapes.”

Gerovassiliou Malagousia 2010

This is the wine that Smith recommended as a “splash-out treat,” especially, “if you’re feasting on a shellfish banquets or just fancy a unique aperitif.”

He added: “This total gem from Greece has the perfect balance of peachy fruit tinged with exotic aromas to refresh and tantalise with every sip.”

2011 Late Harvest Riesling, Elgin

In The Times, Jane MacQuitty recommended this South African Riesling, writing that “Paul Cluver, father and son, make some of the Cape’s finest sweet Rieslings.”

She added: “This greeny-gold, minerally ’11 with pineapple and Granny Smith fruit is a real treat.”

2011 Pagos del Galir, Godello, Valdeorras

This is the wine that the Daily Mail‘s Matthew Jukes described as “the most exciting, new Spanish white wine of the year so far.” Jukes added: “The exquisite nose of jasmine blossom and ripe pear is matched by the dramatic, citrus-themed body and devastatingly crisp and refreshing finish. This is Spanish white wine at its best.”

2012 Cambalala, Fairtrade Pinotage, Western Cape

Jukes also picked out this “brilliant, inexpensive Pinotage”, which he said was “the perfect wine to drink alongside roast lamb.”

He added: “The wonderful red cherry and coffee bean-scented nose is followed by a sleek, moreish palate. Not too heavy, this is the perfect red for all types of palates and dishes.”

Pouilly Fuissé Vignes Blanches 2011 Cordier Pere & Fils

In The Scotsman, Rose Murray Brown recommended this wine, writing: “For those who like their Chardonnays rich, honeyed, spicy, nutty and intense, Cordier’s Pouilly Fuissés are a revelation.”

She added: “You’ll get beautifully poised citrus fruits, a honeyed creamy, leesy palate and rich long length. Superb.”

2009 Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, Vergelegen

Hamish Anderson, writing in the Daily Telegraph, picked out this wine, which he said, “is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon but with a good helping of Bordeaux stalwarts Merlot and Cabernet Franc in the blend.”

Anderson added: “The latter two grapes bring fresh, savoury elements to the dark, blackberry-rich fruit.”

2010 Château d’Anglès ‘Classique’, La Clape

Anderson also recommends this white wine, he explained: “White is particularly successful in La Clape – a sub region of the Languedoc based around the Massif de la Clape – in part due to the cooling influence of the nearby sea.” In recommending this wine Anderson wrote: “This blend of Bourboulanc, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne oozes class; it is rich yet remains refreshing by notes of dried thyme, lemon zest and the sea.”
