Conwy Brewery produces St David’s Day ale
North Wales brewers Conwy Brewery has produced a St David’s Day ale called Leeky Barrel, which is made using leeks.
In a possible candidate for one of our weirdest beer ingredients, the ale uses caramelised leeks, which are infused during the brewing process to create “a dark, sweet tasting ale”.
The leek became the emblem of Wales after it was used to help Welsh soldiers in a battle against the English army. The Welsh soldiers wore leeks on their helmets to distinguish themselves from the English.
Gwynne Thomas from Conwy Brewery said: “We wanted to go all out for St David’s Day this year and our brewers have concocted the perfect balance of leek and beer.
“Not only are leeks our national emblem, they have a tangy but smooth flavour, which complements the bitterness of the ale.
“As a nation we’re proud of our history, heritage and culinary offering – and now, people can literally pour out a taste of it all to raise a glass to our patron Saint.”
Dewi Davies, from Food North Wales added: “North Wales has a rich food and drink offering and our Leeky Barrel beer just goes to show the creativity of our artisan producers.
“Leeks are an inherent part of our history and we are sure St David would be pleased to know that they are the special ingredient in his beer.”
