Texan whisky heads for the UK

Texan craft distillery Balcones is officially launching its whisky range in the UK this autumn.

Established in 2008 by head distiller, Chip Tate, the Waco-based operation produces blue corn whiskies as well as a Texas single malt. The company claims to be the first whisky producer from the US state since Prohibition.

Four whiskies from Balcones’ seven-strong range will be available from the first week of November through The Whisky Exchange, based at Vinopolis in London.

These include Baby Blue, RRP £56.95, which is also available from specialist retailer Master of Malt. Made from atole, a roasted blue corn meal, Baby Blue will be accompanied by its sibling True Blue 100, a 100-proof roasted blue corn whisky, which promises “deeper wood notes, stone fruit, and butterscotch” and will have an RRP of £67.95.

Also coming to the UK is Brimstone, a corn whisky which is smoked through Texas scrub oak instead of Scottish peat, RRP £64.95, as well as a single malt with an RRP of £74.95.

Explaining the decision to extend Balcones’ sales efforts to the UK, Tate said: “We are very excited about launching in such a wonderful whisky market. UK consumers know their spirits and have an appreciation for fine whiskies.”

As for the product itself, he observed: “Our spirits will hopefully showcase what craft distilling is truly all about – refined, unique spirits born of tradition, that add something new, something bold.”

As reported previously in the drinks business, the US craft distilling scene is currently enjoying a period of rapid growth.
