Olly Smith designs new decanter

Olly Smith is extending his glassware collection with a new crystal decanter.

In 2011 Smith ordered a specially designed Zalto glass with a shorter stem for practicality and to easily fit in small cupboards and dishwashers.

After speaking with Daniel Primack, Director of Around Wine, about the practicalities of decanting wine and Smith realised that many decanter designs mean they are tricky to pour, clean and store.

So with that in mind the pair set about coming up with a more user-friendly decanter. After some complicated mathematics to get the ratios right, “The Bottle” was born. Commissioned in non-lead crystal the shape means it fits comfortably in the hand, is easy to pour, wash and drain.

The design means this decanter can be placed in the fridge door encouraging more use and it does not dominate a table.

The dishwasher-friendly decanter retails for £55 and is available from www.ollysmith.com and www.aroundwine.co.uk; this limited edition comes stamped with Olly’s logo.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!. This decanter looks like something from a hospital ward. Some red wines are best decanted. Those few that benefit from chilling do not. The English and Irish designs of the late18th and early19th centuries have never been bettered aesthetically and can be found at very modest prices. The effort here seems superflous! . .

Agree with Riesler, it’s quite clearly a milk bottle !
