New York hits record Michelin tally
New York’s Michelin-starred tally has risen to a record 66 restaurants as the guide released its 2013 guide to the city.
All seven of New York’s three star venues retained this top ranking, while the addition of Atera in Tribeca, which opened this year with just 18 covers, brought the city’s tally of two-starred restaurants to seven as well. Former two star holder Kaijitsu was demoted to single star status.
Nine newcomers contributed to the total of 52 New York restaurants that now hold one Michelin star, an increase of last year’s 42-strong tally. Fresh additions included Aquavit, Hakkasan, 15 East and the NoMad. Three restaurants – Laut, Marc Forgione and Veritas – lost their star.
In keeping with a trend for good value, often more casual dining, this eighth edition of the Michelin guide has given 126 restaurants its Bib Gourmand award, a distinction restricted to those venues offering two courses and a glass of wine for $40 or less. The guide also features a series of restaurants where a meal costs less than $25.
New York’s famously diverse restaurant scene is also well represented in the guide, with 61 different cuisines featured across the 896 venues included in this year’s guide.
This latest edition puts New York slightly ahead of the 60 stars awarded to London in Michelin’s 2013 UK & Ireland edition, which was leaked last week. However, both cities still lag some way behind Tokyo in Japan, which boasts 200 Michelin-starred restaurants.
A detailed report on New York’s latest dining trends, from theatrical experiences to casual dining and the gastronomic rise of Brooklyn, will appear in the latest issue of Eat.Drink, the drinks business’ on-trade report, which comes out with the October issue.
