Charles Krug attempts “wine wave” record

Charles Krug Winery in St Helena, California, will attempt to break the world record for the longest relay wine toast this Sunday.

Dubbed the “Napa Valley Wine Wave”, the wave must be a sequential toast where participants clink glasses in order from start to finish, rather than everyone clinking glasses simultaneously.

An official Guinness World Records adjudicator will announce whether the new world record has been set and, if successful, participants will receive a medal to commemorate the event.

“The art of the clink is not as easy as it looks when we expect to have hundreds of people clinking wine glasses in order from start to finish. Let’s just hope no one messes up,” St Helena mayor Del Britton told the San Francisco Chronicle.

The current world record for the longest relay wine toast is held by citizens in Guangzhou, China, who set the record of 321 participants last November.

After the attempt on Sunday morning, attendees will be treated to wines from a dozen St Helena producers, including Charles Krug, Ballentine, Rutherford Grove and Trinchero, along with food from local restaurants.

The fundraising event is open to both participants and spectators, with all proceeds going to scholarships for students of agriculture, viticulture, winemaking, business and hospitality.

To participate in the toast, attendees must buy a US$100 tax-deductible ticket.

Other quirky, wine-related world records include “Most People Uncorking Wine Simultaneously” and “Longest Time on a Balance Board Holding a Glass on the Forehead.”
