Nancy Gilchrist MW has been named as the 2012 Champagne Ambassador.
Nancy Gilchrist MW
The final was held yesterday (10 September) at Morton’s Club in London.
All the candidates were put through their paces by a panel comprised of the president of the association of wine educators Charles Metcalfe, independent merchant Patrick Sandeman, freelance wine expert John Downes MW, Michael Buriak of the WSET and Françoise Peretti the director of the Champagne Bureau.
The theme this year was “wood casks versus stainless steel vats: a style exercise”.
The candidates were given four different Champagne styles to taste and then delivered a talk on the impact of wood and stainless steel on “terroir and winemaking in Champagne”.
They were judged on their knowledge, communication skills and their ability to engage their audience in the subject.
Gilchrist emerged as the winner, with Jo Cowderoy and Tim Hall taking the runner-up spots.
Gilchrist will now head to Europe for the final on 18 October, where she will face competition winners from across the continent.
