Distell buys in to China
The South African wine and spirits group Distell has bought a 60% stake in a Chinese distributor to strengthen its position in the Chinese market.
Distell bought the share in CJ Wines & Spirits for an undisclosed sum, and the new venture will now trade as Distell China. The managing director of the new company is Rody Wong, who formerly ran CJ Wines & Spirits.
In a statement, Wong said: “The partnership with Distell creates the opportunity to accelerate the excellent progress achieved thus far with two of the company’s major brands Bisquit and Amarula.”
CJ Wines & Spirits has its headquarters in Guandong province in south-east China, and has operations in Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China.
The company will concentrate on expanding distribution of the Bisquit cognac and Amarula cream liqueur brands, capitalising on the strong potential within southern China, before addressing markets like Beijing and Shanghai.
