New York diners splash out on Petrus ‘82
Two business colleagues set pulses racing at New York’s 21 Club restaurant this summer when they calmly ordered two bottles of 1982 Pétrus.

In the midst of a quiet midweek evening’s service, the two colleagues ordered their first bottle with their first course, then asked for another with their main.
The total bill for the two bottles came in at $16,640. The food bill added up to just $200. The bill shows that the restaurant kindly offered two complimentary cookies with the diners’ coffee.
Speaking to the New York Post, Phil Pratt, wine director at the 21 Club, said: “The gentleman knew what he was ordering. It was a little strange, especially when one of the guys was drinking coffee throughout the meal, too. But I don’t judge. It’s their money; they can do what they want with it. If he wants Coca-Cola in his wine, I’m OK with that.”
Traditionalists may raise an eyebrow at the food eaten alongside the Pétrus. The main courses were Dover sole, and Steelhead Salmon – not classic matches with a Pomerol.
The 21 Club bought a case of the wine on release in the 1980s, and it’s been in their cellars ever since, so the provenance is impeccable. Pratt says he now has just three bottles left, and is considering raising the list price on what remains.
