Clos Fourtet tops Right Bank risers

Clos Fourtet is the top performing Right Bank estate so far in 2012 according to Liv-ex.

As Lafite has continued to see its premium fall and the other first growths fare little better, attention has increasingly fallen on the better performing Right Bank estates.

Of all the indices on Liv-ex, the Right Bank 100 was the best performer between June 2011 and June 2012, registering a 0.9% drop compared to the 30% dip seen by the first growths and their second wines.

Meanwhile, the big Right Bank names that make up the Right Bank 50 saw an 11% drop overall.

With six wines in the Right Bank 100’s best performers list, including the top two, Clos Fourtet has risen strongly, closely followed by Eglise Clinet, Evangile and Figeac.

Clos Fourtet’s 2000 vintage has shown a 69% increase between December 2011 and July 2012, from £555 a case to £940.

Its 2008 vintage was the next best performer with a 38% rise to £508 over the same period.

Eglise Clinet took the next three places with its 2002, 2001 and 2000 offerings seeing respective rises of 30%, 24% and 23%.

Although the 23% push for the 2000 took it to over £3,000 a case (the most expensive on the list), the higher rise of 30% for the 2002 had only lifted it to £662.

The majority of the wines in the list – 14 in all – spanned the vintages 2000 to 2003, with many of them, even some 2000s, still available for less than £1,000 a case.
