Chinese and Brazilian wines go on sale at Waitrose
Waitrose is to become the only supermarket in the UK to stock wines from China and Brazil.
The news follows the success of the two Indian wines the grocer introduced last year to its “World of Wines” shelves.
The Chinese wine will be a Changyu Cabernet Gernischt from the edge of the Gobi desert and the Brazilian a sparkling rosé from Serra Gaúcha called Miolo Cuvée Tradition.
Both wines have European expertise behind them: Changyu employs Lenz Moser as a consultant and Miolo works with Michel Rolland.
One of the supermarket’s wine buyers explained: “We’re bringing in a new era of lesser known wines being sold in the UK as the interest in China, and more specifically the Chinese wine industry, continues to grow.”
Waitrose is a market leader in stocking wines from up and coming wine nations and regions and is the only UK supermarket with a substantial range of English wine both still and sparkling.
Both new wines will go on sale from 28 August, the Changyu Cabernet for £9.99 and the Miolo Cuvée Tradition for £11.99.
Waitrose added that this was not the first time that a Chinese wine had gone on sale at a UK supermarket but this had subsequently been de-listed.
