Spirited performance from independent sector
A spirits retailer outperformed a number of highly regarded UK wine merchants to win Independent Retailer of the Year at The Drinks Business Awards 2012.
Despite having just a single outlet, The Whisky Exchange impressed judges with the extent to which it has become an authoritative voice within its specialised field, while reaching consumers well beyond the confines of its shop floor.
From an excellent website to initiatives such as allowing customers to fill their own bottle or meet distillers and the growing success of its event The Whisky Show, the company stood out as an independent business making its voice heard well above that of much larger operations.
This year’s runner up was Roberson Wine, based in High Street Kensington, West London. The retailer was praised for its “well-run operation, enthusiastic team and great events”, marking it out as a strong model for other independent merchants.
Also shortlisted in this category were Laithwaites Wine, which has 11 stores across the south of England, and Caviste, which has three outlets across Hampshire and Berkshire.
