Brunello promo to provide Bordeaux alternatives
Justerini & Brooks is to send out its first specific Brunello offer at the end of May to highlight the value and stylistic diversity in the Tuscan region.
The merchant has expanded the number of Brunello producers in its portfolio, and will promote five names in the offer (see below) from the 2007 vintage.
Speaking about the development, J&B buyer Giles Burke-Gaffney told db, “The value certainly exists and there are plenty selling wine at the same level you might buy a top Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and obvioulsy below Burgundy and Bordeaux prices.”
Continuing he said, “When you look at the quality and the range of wines there is something of real interest there that will appeal to Barolo and Burgundy loving customers.”
Also, referring to the Sangiovese grape, which is used without blending with other varieties in the production of Brunello, he commented, “Sangiovese is a great grape variety with great potential – it can produce fine and elegant wines.
“It has perhaps been missed in the past because of blending with international varieties [in Super Tuscans] but producers are going back to it, and that will start filtering through to consumers.”
As for whether J&B’s customers were looking for Bordeaux and Burgundy alternatives as the prices of fine wines from both these regions rise, Giles believes there is a move to experiment.
“We’ve always tried to diversify and we’ve realised over the last five to 10 years that there are so many things out there that if they are really good our customers will be interested, and it doesn’t have to be really well known.
“And I think this is part of a wider thing, and a bit of that is to do with diversifying out of Bordeaux.”
He concluded by highlighting a latent demand for wines with quality and regional typicity.
“We are finding that things with character, that are unique to where they are from, and well made, and make to drink as well – people go crazy for them.”
The Brunello di Montalcino producers to be included in the J&B offer, and to be shown at a tasting at the merchant’s offices on Thursday 24th May are:
• Uccelliera
• Poggio Antico
• Le Ragnaie
• Siro Pacenti
• Palazzone
