Fine wine sales soar at Tesco
Tesco has reported a 50% increase in fine wine sales in the past 12 months.
The “strategic revamp” overseen by fine wine product development manager, Laura Jewell MW, was apparently a response to increased trading up from the grocer’s customers.
The changes have affected both wines in-store and online, with the focus in stores focusing on wines priced between £15-£30 from both “classic Old World appellations and the occasional New World boutique winery.”
Previously named “The Collection”, the range has been more clearly dubbed “Fine Wine”.
Furthermore, there are a greater number of indicators that the grocer has a wider range of wines online – over 300 – and at a broader range of price points.
Jewell commented: “Over the past year the Tesco Fine Wine range has been given a complete facelift and, as our rising sales figures indicate, a growing number of our customers are prepared to pay a little bit more for a top quality bottle of wine.
“The selection will be refreshed every few months to encourage these customers to continue to trade up and experiment with new wines. This is an exciting step in the development of the Tesco wine range and we are proud of the success this initiative has generated to date.”
Some of the picks of Tesco’s online portfolio – all for six packs – include: 1989 Clos du Marquis for £390; 2001 Pichon-Longueville-Baron for £477; 2001 Château la Commanderie De Mazeyras for £180 and 2004 Château Poujeaux £264, as well as ranges of Burgundy, Rhône, Champagne, Italy and Spain.
