M&S to release Hospices de Beaune purchases
Marks & Spencer will become the first UK high street retailer to offer its customers wines bought at the annual Hospices de Beaune auction.
The retailer purchased a total of eight barrels of 2011 Burgundy at last November’s event: four red from Volnay 1er Cru Blondeau and four white from Saint-Romain.
The two wines both from Lucien Le Moine, are expected to be launched in Spring 2013, bottled under the Hospices de Beaune label. M&S already works with the producer, buying en primeur wines, which are then bottled under its exclusive Caves de Colombe label.
On the decision to work with Mounir Saouma from Lucien Le Moine for this latest project, M&S wine buyer Andy Howard MW, who led the initiative, said: “As the man behind the highly regarded Lucien Le Moine label he has built a worldwide reputation for the quality of the wines he matures in his cellars.
“We tasted all the wines prior to the auction and were delighted to be successful in bidding for the two cuvées that we picked out as ideal for our customer.”
Burgundy is a particularly successful area for the retailer, which currently offers 22 red and 25 white wines from the region, with especially strong sales from Chablis and Fleurie.
