Riesling Week line-up revealed

Wines of Germany has unveiled the line-up of retailers and restaurants taking part in the UK’s first-ever Riesling Week, which takes place later this month.

Riesling Week – a German wine promotion in association with restaurants and wine retailers which started in the US in 2005 – will run from 23-31 July in the UK.

The promotion aims to highlight to consumers the quality, versatility and food-matching capabilities of German Rieslings at all price points.

Eight top restaurants in the South East, including the Michelin-starred Yauatcha and The Ledbury in London, will be taking part in Riesling Week.

Private members club Home House is running a month-long promotion to celebrate Germany’s prized grape varietal, with exclusive discounts on German Rieslings being offered throughout July.

For consumers outside London, Riesling Week can be enjoyed at five-star country hotel, The Vineyard at Stockcross and the Hotel du Vin Winchester.

Fifteen wine merchants across the country have signed up for Riesling Week, including Avery’s of Bristol, Cheshire-based Corks Out, Glasgow wine merchant Inverarity One to One, Tanner’s in Shrewsbury, and Ex-Cellar in London.

Full information on all Riesling Week participants and their promotions can be found at www.winesofgermany.co.uk/events or on Facebook.

The prize for the best performing restaurant and retailer will be £1,000 each towards new German wine listings, with runners-up each getting £500 towards German wine listings. A member of the wine service staff from the winning restaurant will also win a place on the exclusive Sommelier Spring Class trip to Germany in April 2012.

Wines of Germany’s UK managing director Nicky Forrest said: “We’re really excited about bringing Riesling Week to the UK, it’s one of our biggest consumer-facing initiatives for three years and we’re delighted so many top restaurants and wine merchants are supporting it.

“With consumers increasingly looking for lighter, aromatic wines, it’s great to see the trade really getting behind German Riesling and showing their customers the modern face of German wines.”
