Savoy joins Laithwaites in corking idea
The Savoy Hotel has teamed up with Laithwaites for a cork recycling initiative to support the I Love Natural Cork campaign.
Since 1 January, The Savoy, together with its restaurant Simpson’s in the Strand, has been collecting all used corks. The partnership will see Laithwaites collect the corks, which will then be shredded into garden mulch and spread on the wine merchant’s own vineyard in Theale, Berkshire.
In time, other vineyards in Berkshire and Oxfordshire will be able to benefit from what is being cited as an exercise in “bark to bottle to vineyard” recycling.
Debra Patterson, environmental ambassador for The Savoy, commented, “Since re-opening we have been trying hard to recycle as much as possible, and we are delighted to support this innovative scheme.
“The Savoy is a place associated with drinking, dining and celebrations and so we hope to be able to contribute a substantial number of corks, thus showing the way for other properties to follow our example.”
The I Love Natural Cork campaign was launched in July 2010 by the Portuguese Cork Association (APCOR) with the aim of encouraging both consumers and trade to choose wine bottled using natural cork stoppers. The organisation aims to highlight the environmental, economic and socio-cultural benefits of using cork.
