On-trade files January bounce-back
Sales figures from major UK pub and restaurant groups saw a combined like-for-like increase of 10.7% for January compared with the same month last year.
The figures, compiled by Peach Factory in partnership with KPMG, UBS and the Coffer Group, are drawn from 18 major operators, including Mitchells & Butlers, Whitbread, Pizza Hut and Tragus.
The same group saw December like-for-like sales fall by 4.2% as a result of the heavy snowfall which hit the UK at the end of 2010. Indeed, Peach Factory’s Peter Martin noted that the poor weather last January should temper the positive reaction to these latest results.
“However,” he added, “the double-digit recovery this year more than compensates for that and will encourage operators into hoping that this performance may be more than just a readjustment.”
Richard Hathaway, head of travel, leisure and tourism at KPMG, supported this view, noting: “Total sales, including the effect of new openings, were up 11.4% indicating a steady recovery ahead of Valentine’s Day which is expected to boost sales for premium outlets and chains alike for February.”
