Giants take over Chateau Beychevelle
Drinks firms Castel and Suntory have increased their shares in Château Beychevelle and its subsidiaries Château Beaumont and wine merchants Barrière Frères, and now own the business outright between themselves.
Castel took a 50% share and Suntory the other 50%, following a sale of the controlling 63% stake belonging to Grands Millésimes de France and insurance company Ethias.
Suntory, which has been a shareholder for over 20 years, used the sale to increase its stake from 37% to 50%. Castel is a new shareholder and was sold a 50% stake.
Both companies already own numerous other châteaux and estates around Bordeaux and in other wine regions around the world.
Castel recently acquired two Saint-Emilion properties; châteaux Tour Saint-Christophe and Tour Musset and also Haut Caplane in Sauternes.
