WSTA welcomes move on fortified wines
The Wine and Spirit Trade Association has welcomed confirmation that new UK regulations on measures for fortified wine will continue to allow 100ml servings.
Draft legislation proposed by the last government threatened to restrict measures to 50ml or 70ml. However, following concerns raised by the WSTA, the National Measurements Office will now allow multiples of these measures to be served when the new regulations take effect from October 2011.
The new regulations will also permit smaller servings of wine, thus allowing samples to be sold, as well as the "schooner" 2/3 pint measure for beer and cider.
Jeremy Beadles, chief executive of the WSTA, praised the decision, saying: “This flexibility will allow different fortified wines to be served in appropriate measures and, along with the move on ‘sample’ size wine servings, offers some much needed de-regulation that the whole trade can welcome."
