Cognac revival gathers pace
Further evidence of the continuing revival in fortunes of Cognac came this week with the announcement that exports reached a record high in 2010.
The Bureau National Interprofessionnel Cognac (BNIC) said exports rose by 30% to €1.86 billion for the 12 months to the end of December.
Volumes were up by 18% on the year to 153.1 million bottles, though this was 5m short of the 2007 record.
The key driver, naturally, was the Far East, with shipments to the region up 34% on last year to 50.9m bottles. China led the way, rising by 55% to 18.8m bottles.
Shipments to North America increased by 7.5% to 49.2m bottles, while exports to European countries also rose by 11.7% to 46.7m bottles.
