Fire pushes Manchester Browns launch to 2011

Fire damage has delayed the opening of Browns bar & brasserie in Manchester until after Christmas.

The first new venue for the UK chain in eight years was originally due to open its doors in early December. However, after fire broke out in the basement of the former Athenaeum bar on York Street, the launch has been pushed back until mid-January.

Located in the city centre, the Grade II listed Edwardian baroque building has been restored to create a spacious, contemporary venue serving everything from breakfast to lunch, tea, dinner and cocktails.

A spokesperson for the Browns group said: “We are working hard to get back on track as soon as we possibly can and taking expert advice and guidance from the listed building departments, surveyors and our own builders who are helping us to assess the damage.

“We would like to take the opportunity to thank the Greater Manchester fire fighters for their speedy attendance to the scene.”
