Entries open for AFWS UK Sommelier of the Year
The Academy of Food & Wine Services is calling for entries to the 2011 Champagne Piper-Heidsieck UK Sommelier of the Year competition.
Entries are invited from professional sommeliers and wine waiters from any type of dining establishment, whether fine dining, high street or gastropub.
Commenting on this aim to broaden the competition’s appeal, AFWS chairman Nick Scade explained: “The role of front-of-house has gained in profile and importance across the industry and we hope the level of entries to the 2011 UK Sommelier of the Year competition will reflect this.”
Last year’s winner was Christopher Delalonde MS of London-based sommelier service Sarment Wines. The 2011 judging panel includes Gerrard Basset MS MW, Matt Wilkin MS and Ian Harris, chief executive of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust.
Entrants must achieve a 75% pass mark on the initial written questionnaire before progressing to one of five regional finals. The five regional winners, together with the eight highest scoring candidates overall and the two 2010 runners up, will then compete at the national finals in London on 1 June 2011.
Entry forms can be downloaded from www.afws.co.uk and all entries must be accompanied by an employer nomination. The closing date is 7 January 2011.
