Artist speculation pushes Mouton up

The rumours surrounding who will illustrate the Mouton-Rothschild 2008 vintage are driving prices upward.

There has been growing speculation that a Chinese artist will be commissioned to provide the painting for Mouton’s 2008 vintage label.

As a result, case prices have jumped significantly in a matter of weeks on the Liv-ex index.

Between 3 November and 15 November prices rose from £4,770 to £6,370. A similar reaction was noted when Lafite decorated its 2008 bottles with the Chinese symbol eight. A case of Lafite 2008 now trades at £13,000.

This ploy by Lafite has now made its 2008 vintage more expensive than either 2005 or indeed 2009 – each last traded at £11,600 and £12,400 respectively.

The jump is truly astonishing when one considers the enormous pricing that surrounded 2009, which left 2008 very much by the wayside , making it a drinker’s – rather than an investor’s – vintage.

It would not be the first time a Chinese artist has been commissioned to illustrate the Mouton label. In 1998 Gu Gan was invited by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild to design the wine label for the Mouton Rothschild 1996 vintage.
