London bartenders triumph in Monin Cup
London’s bartenders swept to victory in the Monin Cup cocktail competition, taking the top three places among a nationwide field of top mixologists from the UK Bartenders’ Guild.
Giulio Amodio, from China Tang at The Dorchester Hotel scooped first prize in the competition, which took place at London jazz club Ronnie Scott’s. In addition to the Monin Cup itself, Amodio was rewarded with a cheque for £750, while runner up Tiziano Tasso from Club at the Ivy received £350.
The third prize of £250 went to Mirko Falconi from the Lanesborough Hotel, who also won the award to Best Technical Cocktail.
Each contestant was challenged to create a cocktail containing at least one Monin syrup or liqueur, which was then judged by a panel of industry professionals. Cocktails were assessed on technical ability, appearance, aroma and taste.
Six finalist were then challenged to conjure up a cocktail using surprise ingredients and Monin fruit purees.
Amodio’s winning cocktail, Red Tulip, consisted of 35ml Calvados, 20ml Carpano Classico, 10ml Dry Vermouth, 10ml Monin strawberry liqueur, 10ml Monin raspberry liqueur and a squeeze of lemon, garnished with fresh fruit and served in a Martini glass.
