RSC unveils new food and drink venues

The Royal Shakespeare Company is set to opens the doors to the new in-house food and drink venues at its recently refurbished Stratford-upon-Avon location.

The new rooftop restaurant, riverside terrace and café are all part of the four-year £112.8 million transformation project which will also see the creation of a new 1,000-plus seat stage auditorium and a 36 metre-high viewing tower.

The rooftop restaurant will feature dishes such as slow braised daube of beef with pommes mousseline and roasted roots; venison casserole with roast baby pumpkin and salsify chips, fillet of bass with celeriac purée, roast chicory and cockle dressing.

The wine list will offer diners local ales and wines from Berry Bros. The restaurant boasts an Enomatic system, just like the Kensington Wine Rooms, offering drinkers a range of fine wines by the glass.

The price for the pre-theatre two-course meal is £14.95, or £17.95 for three courses, with room for 150 diners.

The riverside terrace and café will provide seating for a further 40 people, offering tea-soaked soft fruits with fromage frais for breakfast, wild mushrooms with soft herbs and cracked wheat salad for lunch, and handmade lamb and coriander faggots with smoked paprika and flatbreads in the evening.

The eating and drinking operation is headed by Rob Fredrickson, head of catering, and head chef Nick Funnell.

Fredrickson said: “I am thrilled to be part of this opening for the RSC; we really want to be an integral part of the life of the West Midlands as well as a destination for UK and international visitors.

“We are establishing a seven-day-a-week in-house operation which I hope will offer something for all customers, budgets and occasions – whether it’s a pre-theatre meal, a coffee and snack during the day, a family weekend lunch or a special celebration.

“It’s a building for everyone and I want to create a welcoming atmosphere in our Rooftop Restaurant, Riverside Café and bars, with great food and friendly service in unique surroundings."

Bookings for the Rooftop restaurant will start being taken in October.
