Oddbins to stock its first Romanian wine for 10 years
Oddbins has announced the addition of a Romanian wine to its portfolio, the first in 10 years.
The Frunza Pinot Grigio, produced by Cramele Recas in the Banat region in western Romania, will be available in September, RRP £5.99.
Philip Cox, managing director of the winery, described the listing as a “major breakthrough” for Romanian wine.
“We hope that this news will have a positive impact on other Romanian producers looking to break into this market,” he said.
In addition, there was some indication from the retailer that further listings could follow in particular with some of the country’s native varieties.
Ana Sapungiu, buyer for Oddbins, said: “There has been a vast improvement in the quality of Romanian wines in the past decade and the Frunza Pinot Grigio represents an excellent price-quality ratio. We are also looking at some of Romania’s indigenous varietals which we feel could appeal to our wine-savvy customers.”
The Recas winery is one of a group of producers called The Romanian Winegrowers, who are working to improve Romania’s image and seek greater international recognition for their wine.
