Internet sales splurge
Web shoppers in the UK splashed out £4.4 billion in the year to June 2010, raising the year-on-year online spending level by a fifth, according to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.
The results have been attributed to a combination of unusually sustained good weather in the UK and a busy sporting calendar including Wimbledon and the World Cup, something which has also buoyed the UK’s online wine market.
The Capgemini report also revealed that June was the second consecutive month in 2010 when year-on-year online sales have grown by 20% – the highest rate since June 2008.
Speaking of the increase in sales, Chris Webster, vice president, head of retail consulting and technology at Capgemini, said: “The combination of the World Cup, Wimbledon and the high temperatures resulted in a record June for online shopping.
“Despite turbulent times, consumers are more savvy than ever and continue to look towards online shopping to find the best deals that the high street and the internet can offer.”
With the amount spent online in the last year equating to £72 for every person in the UK, the future for online wine sales looks bright too, as the August edition of the drinks business testifies.
db’s in-depth report on the state of UK retail wine market not only showcases the latest innovations in the UK’s virtual wine market while featuring all the major players in this category, but it demonstrates that online wine sales now account for nearly 10% of the entire wine market in the UK, which stands at 136.5 million 9-litre cases (MAT w/e 20.03.2010, Nielsen).
