db declares Marjosse best value Bordeaux in 09

A detailed analysis of Bordeaux 2009 according to price and critic’s scores has unveiled unexpected results.

Having trawled through the mass of en primeur releases, the July edition of the drinks business picked out Marjosse as this year’s best bargain.

The extensive feature ranked the 2009 wines according to their average score divided by release price to devise a quality-price index (QPI) for each label.

Interestingly, Marjosse, with a release price of £5.42 and average score of 88.5, came out with the highest QPI.

The property, which is in the heart of Entre-Deux-Mers, was bought by Cheval Blanc’s Pierre Lurton in 1997.

Looking at the results further up the price scale, over £10, Château Clauzet has the highest QPI, achieving an average score of 90 and release price of £10.08.

Baron Velge, who bought the estate in 1997, hired respected technical director in Bordeaux, José Bueno, who was previously cellar master for Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

Over £30, Léoville-Las-Cases’s Clos du Marquis took top spot, only just nudging ahead of Pomerol’s La Croix St Georges.
