UK off-trade alcohol sales on the increase
The top ten alcoholic drinks categories in the UK off-trade are all growing in value, according to latest Nielsen data.
According to figures for the year to 17 April, cider grew by 14.4% in value and liqueurs by 12.7%, white spirits rose by 16.6% and Champagne and sparkling wine enjoyed a 9.2% increase.
Inflation, increased excise duty and VAT rates are largely responsible for the rise in value, but six of the categories also showed a rise in volume.
Liqueurs are up 12.9% and cider 10.5%. Ready-mixed alcoholic drinks are showing small growth led by WKD and Crabbie’s Ginger Beer.
The four categories declining in volume are fortified wine, which was down 6.4%, dark spirits was down by 2.1% and lager and ale and stout fell 2% and 1.3% respectively.
The leading brands in the beer, wine and spirit categories include Stella Artois 4%, Bulmers Pear Cider, Russian Standard Vodka, Grant’s Whisky, Viña San Pedro and McGuigan.
