World Cup fever hits Berry Bros

Berry Bros & Rudd has launched the Wine World Cup in the run-up to next month’s football tournament with a mixed case as the prize.

The Wine World Cup is a fantasy football game, which can be played online and gives participants the chance to win a mixed case of wines worth over £1,700.

The budding managers must pick their teams within a budget and with fixed numbers of defenders, midfielders and attackers, in an added twist the players may only hail from the 12 wine producing nations participating.

According to the player’s performance in the World Cup itself, points are allocated and the manager with the most points overall at the end wins the prize.

Berry Bros’ chairman, Simon Berry, laid out the rules of the game: “You can make changes to your team during the competition, but here’s the twist: you can only select players from the 12 wine-producing nations.

"Only one player from any nation may be selected until after Round One, when you will be allowed a maximum of three per nation,” he said.

The mixed case includes wines from each of the 12 wine nations involved, including 2002 Château Latour, 1998 Vega Sicilia Unico and 2005 Opus One.

When the final squads are announced on 1 June participants may register and begin picking their teams. The deadline to sign up with a team is midnight on 10 June.
