Marstons Unveils Cask Magic
One of the UK’s largest regional brewers claims to have made a major breakthrough in improving the consistency of cask ale in pubs.
Marston’s, home of Pedigree and Old Empire, unveiled its Fast Cask innovation last month which, it is suggested, will make it easier for publicans to serve and stock cask ale in peak condition.
The new technology, which Marston’s has been trialing for the last year, involves encasing the yeast required for final fermentation in a gel-like pouch that draws the beer through and ferments it.
This means, say Marston’s, the beer is much more durable, it means a tapped cask can be moved about and it allows cask ale to thrive in conditions where there are no cellaring facilities.
It also means the beer doesn’t need time to settle and there’s no longer need for finings – thus making beer acceptable for vegans.
Marston’s Pedigree and Hobgoblin brands have been released to pubs in Fast Cask form but the brewer has pledged to offer publicans both Fast Cask and original versions of its ales for the time being.
