Liquid gold goes under the hammer

Christie’s is to auction the “Liquid Gold Collection” of Château d’Yquem in Hong Kong as part of its Finest & Rarest Wines auction on 28 May.

The collection has been described as “without doubt the finest and most extensive collection of Château d’Yquem, both in bottles and magnums, ever to appear at auction,” by David Elswood, international head of the wine department at Christie’s in London.
The 129 bottles and 40 magnums span three centuries and include several vintages from the 19th century such as 1825, 1858 and 1893. There are also bottles of every vintage in bottle from the 20th and 21st centuries for example: 1900, 1921, 1945 and 1959.
It is the only major collection of magnums ever to go on sale to include all the major vintages from 1900 to 2005.
Every bottle has come from Château d’Yquem’s cellars and has been vouched for by the staff there, all of whom have been involved in the re-corking and labelling of the older vintages during the period 1989 to 2009.
The collection also includes an etched decanter which is only presented by Château d’Yquem to important collectors.
