Swansea tops tight tipper table

One of the touchiest subjects in the on-trade has been laid bare with the revelation that Swansea residents are the stingiest tippers in the UK.

Research carried out by a discount website found that just one in five diners in Swansea regularly leave a tip. By contrast, Leeds topped the table with 65% tipping staff on a regular basis.

According to the survey of 1,925 people by www.myvouchercodes.co.uk, the average tip in the UK is £1.50, with just 8% tipping the traditional 10% of their bill.

Among those who fail to leave a regular tip, 72% blamed the service charge added to the final bill by many restaurants.

After Swansea, the tightest tippers in the UK are Edinburgh, Coventry, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle, Bristol, Nottingham, Cardiff and Stoke on Trent.

Mark Pearson, managing director of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, said: “Incidentally, some of our biggest traffic to MyVoucherCodes comes from these cities, meaning that despite the fact people from these areas may seem stingy, it may just be their frugality and discount-savviness being misunderstood.”
