South London pub group expands into Kennington

The Renaissance Pub group is continuing to expand its south London presence with a new outlet in Kennington called The Tommyfield.

The new venture, due to open in May, is named after the Oldham-based market where the first fish and chip shop was recorded in the 1860s.

In keeping with the inspiration for its name, fish and chips will be at the heart of the food offer, and customers will be able to choose from lemon sole, sea bass, halibut, coley – grilled or battered and served with double cooked fat chips.

The menu will also include a selection of quintessentially British fare with beef cuts such as Scottish Aberdeen Angus rib, Staffordshire sirloin and Hereford rib eye, as well as pies containing cheeses Ticklemore, Cashel Blue and Caerphilly.

Other traditional British dishes will include Scotch eggs and sausage rolls.

The new pub will also offer smaller plates such as Portland seared scallops with pea shoots, bacon and neeps purée.

Drinks will include a range of British real ales on tap plus 20 wines by the glass, including three English varieties.

Interestingly, The Tommyfield will also provide a take-away and delivery service at lunchtime.

The interior will take its cue from Britain’s market heritage and will feature industrial light fittings, a mahogany bar inlaid with iron, a suspended steel wine cage and an open kitchen.

There will also be a private dining room available for parties of up to 40 people.

The Tommyfield is the latest outlet from Tom Peake, Mark Reynolds and Nick Fox of Renaissance Pubs, the team behind venues The Avalon, Abbeville and Stonehouse in Clapham as well as The Bolingbroke in Battersea.

The Tommyfield will be situated at 185 Kennington Lane in London’s SE11.
