Sainsburys named top Fairtrade supermarket
Sainsbury’s was named as the world’s largest retailer of Fairtrade products last week.
The supermarket chain stocks over 800 Fairtrade goods, and generates a total of US$16 million for Fairtrade every year.
The range also includes four Fairtrade wines from South Africa and one from Argentina.
The statistics show that 1,200 Fairtrade bananas are sold every minute and for every £4 spent on Fairtrade items in the UK, £1 will have been spent at Sainsbury’s.
The company was among the first to sell Fairtrade products in the UK, with Green & Black’s Maya Gold chocolate the first to hit shelves in 1994.
The news comes in the middle of Fairtrade fortnight, which started on 22 February and runs until 7 March.
