Oddbins joins UK retail trade association

UK off-licence chain Oddbins has become a member of trade association the British Retail Consortium (BRC).

The grocer has joined the organisation to supports its work in lobbying the UK government when it comes to the imposition of alcohol laws and taxation.

“We’ve joined the BRC for its impressive record on fighting on behalf of retailing and influencing key-decision makers to ensure legislation is introduced in a way that helps retailers thrive,” said Simon Baile, chief executive at Oddbins.

Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, added: “With the political and economic uncertainty associated with the looming General Election, it’s great to add another voice to the BRC’s lobbying expertise.

“Alcohol is a major issue for all political parties. Oddbins’ membership will boost BRC campaigning to ensure a measured approach to alcohol laws in Westminster, Edinburgh and Brussels,” he continued.

Robertson also said: “We’re also working hard to ensure the business environment retailers work in is not overly burdensome, allowing them to continue maintaining and creating jobs.”

Oddbins is the largest independent high street specialist drinks retailer in the UK. It has 123 outlets and employs over 500 people.

Oddbins was started by entrepreneur Ahmed Pochee in 1963. He delivered bin-ends and oddments of wine – which is how the company got its name – to restaurants and clubs in London’s West End.

In 2008 Oddbins was bought by a consortium headed by Simon Baile, the son of a former managing director of the company.

Baile’s attempts to revitalise the chain were profiled in the Daily Telegraph last Friday .
