Mining corporation misleads SA producers
The saga of a mining company versus Cape wine producers has taken a further twist.
The African Exploration Mining and Finance Corporation (AEMFC) has not withdrawn its prospecting application as previously announced .
The producers remained wary in the wake of last weeks’ news that the AEMFC had pulled the proposal with, it would now appear, considerable justification.
Instead of the confirmation they were expecting of the AEMFC’s withdrawal from the plan, today a spokesperson for the corporation’s regional office told them the company was indeed still proceeding with the application.
The spokesperson described the statement released by the company last week as being ‘incorrect’.
Gary Jordan said: “Legal counsel (for the producers) said that they have had no response from AEMFC regarding an explanation of this absurd matter, and they are confident that they will not receive any response. “Whilst we all were under the impression that sanity had prevailed, AEMFC has continued with its applications. How else can one explain that a company intentionally proceeded contrary to its chairperson’s public announcements!
“Was the statement deliberately vague and deliberately dated 2009? Did AEMFC deliberately mislead the public that they were withdrawing their applications? It certainly appears to be the case.”
