Christie’s global total tops USD50 million

Christie’s has released its global sales figures for 2009 showing a total that tops US$50m (£31.4m).

The largest single sale of the year was a 78-bottle lot of 1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which sold in Hong Kong on 28 November for £112,752.

The top four lots of last year were all bought by private Asian buyers, according to the auction house.

The second biggest single sale was a 60-bottle lot of 1982 Château Lafite-Rothschild sold at a Hong Kong auction in May.

“We are delighted with our global sales total for 2009 which again exceeds $50m for our sales activity worldwide,” said David Elswood, international head of wine at Christie’s.

“Christie’s Wine Department is totally unique as we spread our sales activities over a truly global market, resulting in an even distribution of sales between Europe, the US and Asia,” he continued.

“We intend to continue and develop this global strategy into 2010 with our first spring sale in New York on 27 February."
