Belle Epoque enters a new millennium
Champagne Perrier-Jouët launched its 2002 prestige cuvée, Belle Epoque, in London this week.
The 2002, the house’s inaugural vintage from the 21st century, is widely regarded in Champagne to be a vintage of supreme quality.
Cellar master at Perrier-Jouët, Hervé Deschamps, said of the vintage: “The 2002 is intense yet delicate with a fine balance between structure and acidity. It is truly the epitome of charm and elegance, reflecting the Chardonnays of Cramant and Pinot Noirs of Mailly that have progressively become the markers of the house style.”
Earlier this year, Perrier-Jouët organised a private tasting 20 "historic" vintages from its own cellars, starting with the oldest vintage in Champagne (Perrier-Jouët 1825) through to the first vintage of the new millennium.
The tasting was led by Serena Sutcliffe MW, head of the International Wine Department at auctioneer Sotheby’s, who was subsequently guest of honour at this week’s London launch, which took place at the French ambassador’s residence.
In the presence of the ambassador, Sutcliffe informed the audience of the history of vintage Champagne and continued to explain the nature of the 20-vintage tasting held earlier this year, citing the 1911 vintage as one of the highlights.
The 2002 Belle Epoque is expected to retail at an RSP of £102 per bottle.
