Tesco sells new-to-export variety

Tesco has launched a wine made from Durello, a native Italian variety that has never travelled beyond its local region before.

Coming in the form of a sparkling wine called Dino Spumante, and produced by Cantina di Soave, the wine is “the first of its kind outside the Lessini area” in northern Italy, according to the supermarket.

Durello, which has always been used to make generic sparkling wine in the local area, produces what Italian producers call “base Spumante”.

Export director for the brand, Luca Sabatini said: “We thought there was an opportunity for an Italian Durello Spumante and having talked with Pierpaolo Petrassi MW [Tesco’s senior product development manager] and Tesco, we decided to try something new. The position of Durello now is like Prosecco was 25 years ago.

Petrassi said of the launch: “Dino is designed to be an expression of indigenous grapes, most sparkling wines are international varieties so the Durello was the perfect expression for the Dino brand.”

The Dino Durello Spumante was launched last week in Tesco for £9.99 a bottle and will be the third wine in the Dino portfolio, adding to existing wines Sangiovese di Romagna and the IGT Pinot Grigio.

Cantina di Soave controls 75% of the total production of Durello grapes.
