Jordan brings top chef to Stellenbosch

Stopping off for a long lunch and stunning views is an integral part of any proper visit to South Africa’s Winelands.

Now Jordan Wine Estate has teamed up with former South African chef of the year George Jardine to open a new restaurant on its Stellenbosch property.

Called The Restaurant at Jordan, the new venture is located right next to the estate’s tasting room in a former tobacco curing house, accommodating up to 80 guests either indoors or on the patio.

Under Jardine’s direction, the menu will take advantage of local, seasonal ingredients sourced from South Africa’s best suppliers and producers. The restaurant will also feature a walk-in cheese room.

Jardine’s own eponymous restaurant in Cape Town was recently listed in the San Pellegrino World’s 100 Best Restaurants for the second year running.

On his decision to form this partnership with the Jordans, Jardine explained: “The estate has an absolutely stunning setting and is the perfect place for Louise and me to personally attend to our guests, to pamper their palates and de-stress their minds.”

At the core of the restaurant’s wine list lies several vintages from Jordan Wine Estate itself, accompanied by a selection of some of the top wines from neighbouring producers, such as La Riche, whose vineyards are visible from Jordan. Gary and Kathy Jordan have also sourced a collection of leading Bordeaux and Burgundy wines.

Lunch is designed as a relaxed affair, while dinner, available on Thursday and Friday nights only, is geared towards offering a more serious gastronomic experience, with two tasting menus on offer.

Explaining this latest development in the history of Jordan Wine Estate, Gary Jordan said: “We have been making wines to be served with great food for nearly 20 years, so opening a restaurant on the grounds is a natural progression for us and we are looking forward to showcasing the best of Jordan Wine Estate to our customers.”

This marks the second major restaurant project from Gary and Kathy Jordan this year, after the March launch of High Timber, located on the banks of the Thames by St Paul’s Cathedral in London.
