UK customers remain cautious

UK consumers are still feeling the pinch according to both the Office for National Statistics and the British Retail Consortium.

Figures released last Thursday (17 September) by the ONS showed that between July and August this year, total retail sales volume had shown no growth.

Reacting to the figures, the BRC’s director general, Stephen Robertson, said: "The official data confirms our own findings that the strong retail sales in June and July were not sustained.

“Our Retail Sales Monitor (RSM) showed food sales growth was marginally stronger than in July."

The BRC added that with unemployment rates at a 14-year high and predicted to increase next year, the UK population is still very cautious about spending money on expensive items – unless there are serious discounts involved.
