Officially the best UK wine list
The Old Bridge at Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire has won the Best Restaurant Wine List in England and the overall award for the Best Wine List in the UK, according to the 2010 AA Guide.
In assessing the candidates, the judges pointed in particular to the quality and breadth of wine that the restaurant offers, explaining that rather than a wish-list of names, it has more than 50 wines at less than £20 a bottle together with a wide variety of styles and prices.
Owner of the restaurant and hotel, John Hoskins MW, was also praised for his selection of wines by-the-glass, of which more than 40 are now available. The fine wines by-the-glass, which change monthly, are kept in an Enomatic machine in the hotel’s new wine shop, where those visiting the store can experience a 24-wine tasting.
Speaking of the award, Hoskins said: "I am delighted about this recognition. We won the AA’s first ever Wine Award 10 years ago and now we are the first to win it twice, so I feel doubly honoured.
"Ours is not the biggest list, we don’t go in for multiple vintages of over-priced claret. We try and concentrate on quality and value, as opposed to profit and window-dressing. I think this has struck a chord in a year like 2009."
