db Eats: Muse

It’s always a bit of a gamble picking a decent pub out of the crowd in a strange town. After one false start during an overnight stay in Wetherby, Yorkshire, (looked promising from the outside, nothing but bog standard lager on the inside), we poked our heads through the door of Muse.

Not the most traditional name for a pub perhaps, but we’d been let down by the conservative approach two minutes earlier and instantly realised we’d hit the jackpot here.

After dithering over the selection of ales from Yorkshire and beyond, we were won over by a taster of the Outlaw Wrangler, a light, floral summer ale from the nearby Rooster brewery, made with hops from New Zealand and the US. At £2.50 it was worth all the lager in Yorkshire. Behind the bar there was a good range of premium ciders and continental beers by the bottle, while the wine list looked unflashy but well chosen to fit with the small scale, quality ethos applied to the rest of the offer here.

This was just a quick Saturday afternoon pint, so there wasn’t much time or opportunity to really put this pub through its paces. Looking at the food menu on the blackboard, we wished we hadn’t just eaten. Nothing flashy here, just good proper pub food at sensible prices, with some lighter options for those who need to be functional after lunch.

As for the rest of the good pub checklist, the young team behind the bar were friendly and only too happy to change the barrel straight away when it turned out our ale of choice had been polished off by the Friday night crowd. Inside was clean and light, but cosy, while there was a small outdoor seating area for those hoping to catch some Yorkshire sunshine.

Muse forms part of the Market Town Taverns group, which runs a total of 10 equally promising looking venues across Yorkshire. If you’re looking for a pint in this part of the north and lack the local knowledge to guide yourself, it’s well worth looking up one of these beacons of good pub-keeping.
