NY supermarkets to sell wine
A law allowing supermarkets in New York to sell wine and liquor has come into force following last year’s quashing of the proposal to sell alcohol in the state’s grocery stores. The new legislation will bring in a much-needed extra stream of revenue for the state.
The new legislation is being welcomed by the state’s wine industry, the fourth largest wine-producing nation in the US, as it feels the industry in general would benefit from a broader range of wine-selling outlets.
Last spring, governor David Paterson proposed allowing food stores to sell alcohol in New York but the move was blocked because of a protest by lobby group Last Store on Main Street on the grounds that it would jeopardise the business of New York state’s 2,400 liquor stores.
It is thought that the decision will raise hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue for the state.
